There's been no commits in months and lots of uses of expect() in the code.

If it's not intended for production use right now, that's fine. What's the plans and are there any recommendations for alternatives that are ready?

I have not worked on this project for many months. I personally still use this to run a few backends for personal projects on my raspberry pi, and found it useful for removing boilerplate code. However, its use cases may be a bit specific, and there is no easy way to use newer versions of libraries. So I'd say it might be production ready for small personal projects, but it has definitely not been tested enough and will not have enough long term support for production-use beyond this.
