Description
User Story
In order to understand data.gov's scope and activity at a glance, users want aggregated statistics and visualizations restored to the landing page (similar to previous iteration of data.gov).
Acceptance Criteria
-
GIVEN a user visits the data.gov landing page
WHEN they view the page
THEN they see aggregated statistics about the catalog (dataset count, organization count, etc.) -
GIVEN a user wants to understand catalog activity
WHEN they view landing page visualizations
THEN they see helpful graphs/charts similar to previous data.gov iteration -
GIVEN visualizations are restored
WHEN reviewed for accuracy
THEN statistics match actual catalog data and update appropriately
Background
Source: External beta feedback from Chris Marcum (christopher.steven.marcum@gmail.com) - 1/26/2026
Request: "The aggregated statistics/graphs reported on the landing page of the previous iteration of data.gov were really helpful. suggest restoring those visualizations etc."
Context:
- Previous data.gov had landing page with statistics and visualizations
- Beta catalog appears to have removed or simplified these
- Users found these visualizations helpful for understanding catalog scope
Needs definition:
- Which specific statistics were most valuable?
- Which visualizations should be prioritized?
- Should these live on data.gov homepage or catalog-beta homepage?
- What data sources feed these visualizations?
Security Considerations
None - public-facing visualizations with no security implications. Ensure statistics don't expose sensitive information about unpublished or restricted datasets.
Sketch
- Review previous data.gov landing page (via archive or screenshots) to identify statistics/visualizations
- Determine which landing page this refers to (data.gov vs catalog-beta.data.gov)
- Prioritize most valuable statistics/visualizations
- Identify data sources for statistics (OpenSearch aggregations? Database queries?)
- Design visualization layout and format
- Implement statistics calculation
- Implement visualization rendering
- Set up automated updates for statistics
- Test performance impact of calculations
