It builds a 3d from a photograph as well, are there any indications that this would be a photograph and not a real face?

No indication, it builds from a video, but if the video shows a photograph, it will build it as long as dlib detects a face. If you want to see the SFM framework(requires matlab call), please see the corresponding branch. Now the master branch is using a fixed model.
