After testing the current design, I thought about a new solution that solves

• the "jumping" problem
• the dropdown menu inconsistencies
• and having the headings and the options somehow doubled

• The Sort function stays the same
• the different categories are in panels that can be opened
• Inside there are the checkboxes with the options.
• Next to the category header the number of chosen filters appears, if the user closes this panel, it is still visible that there are filters applied
• therefore we don't use the pills anymore
• at the bottom the user can either close the bar and see the results by the "Show results" button or clear all filters by the "Clear all" button
• the user can't choose more than one option for annotations, so it gets radio buttons

Update:

• no radio button for annotations
• radio buttons for Sort
• complete elimination of dropdowns
• Sort by and the current sorting option in brackets
• separation lines for better overview

For the Licence options only use the short variations:

I pushed a fix for the Repo that implements these changes, and for the Server to handle the changes from switching annotation options from exclusive to inclusive.

Perfekt, it looks so good!
Just still too many sorting options, the only ones we want to keep are the 4 from the screenshot.
And to me everything looks very squeezed to the left, maybe we need some more space or use the horizontal padding, but we have to be careful to keep it consistent with other layouts.

Hmm, I understand that there's no need for this many sorting options, but I feel like at least "most annotations" makes sense to keep, because it helps finding good examples of how users are using the annotation feature, and it's more beneficial than A-Z or Z-A sorting.

If we want to reduce sorting options, I would suggest the following:

• most popular / popularity
• most recent / recency
• most annotations / # of annotations

@Grizzly127 different question, should we add these to the paginator for first and last page?

Example:

This would allow to replicate most of what was made possible by the other sorting options, e.g.: If I want to see whats "least popular", I can jump to the last page of "most popular"
