LESS variable naming formats for states

We should also include a standard for naming variables may represent state-specific values (link the color for a specific item's hover or active state or similar)

Maybe @color-item-bg--hover or @color-item-bg_hover ?

I like the -- modifier approach, that matches our class name conventions, right?
