In order to extrapolate distance information and combine it with the LiDAR we will overlay a ray trace from the image on top of the LiDAR array. An array of distances based on ray traces from a black and white image would be a starting step.
The ray traces would be at an arc and it would be necessary to trace these rays until a white pixel is hit which will signify an obstacle.
Joemegatron used to do this and could likely be used as a reference.
