Cross-platform compatibility

The code directory is not reported as being 0 bytes on *nix systems. This seems to be a critical cross-platform compatibility bug.

EDIT: Tested on OSX 10.7.5 and Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS. Additional testing to discover the scope of this bug would be useful.
