At this point I think it will be faster to re-architect the game rather than continue doing peep-hole optimizations.

I think the code will be much smaller with a "thin client" model. Only the center tile does any thinking and it only sends one message type to leaves - a code that tells them what they should be displaying (each tile is a micro X-terminal). The leaves only send back a code indicating they were pressed - probably a monotonic press counter inside a sendOnFace() datum. Now loop() becomes a single if (iAmCenter()) { and both paths are simple since all state is in the center tile. IamCenter() is only dependant on number of neighbors==6., which you get for free. If you are not center, then you are a (passive thin) leaf.

See any reasons why this design not work for this game? Complications I am not seeing?
