Fail to play audio cd from drive.

Hi there, I hope it's OK to ask a quite basic question here, but I'm stuck with what I want to achieve with mpd: I want to use the cdio_paranoia plugin to play back audio CDs with my Ubuntu Server running mpd. However, if I try to play back a cd I added to the queue via 'mpc add cdda://', it won't work and the log says:
' Jan 17 16:31 : exception: Failed to decode cdda://
Jan 17 16:31 : exception: nested: Unable find or access a CD-ROM drive with an audio CD in it. ' while there is a audio cd in the drive. If I attempt to rip the same cd with cdparanoia it works just fine, though.

Any hint for a noob? Thanks in advance.

Probably it's because your MPD daemon has no permissions to access the CD drive. Check that.

Thanks for the hint. That was it, kinda.

Although I had the mpd user in the right groups, it wasn't working. The reason was, that in my config, there was also a group set, which overwrites the groups set on OS level. I commented that out, and boom: it worked! Thanks again!

The group memberships of the "mpd" user in your user database doesn't matter for anything. What matters is the actual groups of the MPD process. Many people don't know the difference, but it's an important one.
