Vulnerability Details

auth0/node-jws is a JSON Web Signature implementation for Node.js. In versions 3.2.2 and earlier and version 4.0.0, auth0/node-jws has an improper signature verification vulnerability when using the HS256 algorithm under specific conditions. Applications are affected when they use the jws.createVerify() function for HMAC algorithms and use user-provided data from the JSON Web Signature protected header or payload in HMAC secret lookup routines, which can allow attackers to bypass signature verification. This issue has been patched in versions 3.2.3 and 4.0.1.

CVE-2025-15284

Vulnerable Library - qs-6.5.2.tgz

A querystring parser that supports nesting and arrays, with a depth limit

Library home page: https://registry.npmjs.org/qs/-/qs-6.5.2.tgz

Path to dependency file: /package.json

Path to vulnerable library: /node_modules/body-parser/node_modules/qs/package.json,/node_modules/request/node_modules/qs/package.json

Dependency Hierarchy:

  • nexmo-2.9.1.tgz (Root Library)
    • request-2.88.2.tgz
      • qs-6.5.2.tgz (Vulnerable Library)

Found in HEAD commit: f1591f9e7e403e0cb110a7c12eea1553838dca6d

Found in base branch: main

Vulnerability Details

Improper Input Validation vulnerability in qs (parse modules) allows HTTP DoS.This issue affects qs: < 6.14.1.
SummaryThe arrayLimit option in qs does not enforce limits for bracket notation (a[]=1&a[]=2), allowing attackers to cause denial-of-service via memory exhaustion. Applications using arrayLimit for DoS protection are vulnerable.
DetailsThe arrayLimit option only checks limits for indexed notation (a[0]=1&a[1]=2) but completely bypasses it for bracket notation (a[]=1&a[]=2).
Vulnerable code (lib/parse.js:159-162):
if (root === '[]' && options.parseArrays) {
obj = utils.combine([], leaf); // No arrayLimit check
}
Working code (lib/parse.js:175):
else if (index <= options.arrayLimit) { // Limit checked here
obj = [];
obj[index] = leaf;
}
The bracket notation handler at line 159 uses utils.combine([], leaf) without validating against options.arrayLimit, while indexed notation at line 175 checks index <= options.arrayLimit before creating arrays.
PoCTest 1 - Basic bypass:
npm install qs
const qs = require('qs');
const result = qs.parse('a[]=1&a[]=2&a[]=3&a[]=4&a[]=5&a[]=6', { arrayLimit: 5 });
console.log(result.a.length); // Output: 6 (should be max 5)
Test 2 - DoS demonstration:
const qs = require('qs');
const attack = 'a[]=' + Array(10000).fill('x').join('&a[]=');
const result = qs.parse(attack, { arrayLimit: 100 });
console.log(result.a.length); // Output: 10000 (should be max 100)
Configuration:

  • arrayLimit: 5 (test 1) or arrayLimit: 100 (test 2)
  • Use bracket notation: a[]=value (not indexed a[0]=value)
    ImpactDenial of Service via memory exhaustion. Affects applications using qs.parse() with user-controlled input and arrayLimit for protection.
    Attack scenario:
  • Attacker sends HTTP request: GET /api/search?filters[]=x&filters[]=x&...&filters[]=x (100,000+ times)
  • Application parses with qs.parse(query, { arrayLimit: 100 })
  • qs ignores limit, parses all 100,000 elements into array
  • Server memory exhausted → application crashes or becomes unresponsive
  • Service unavailable for all users
    Real-world impact:
  • Single malicious request can crash server
  • No authentication required
  • Easy to automate and scale
  • Affects any endpoint parsing query strings with bracket notation

Vulnerability Details

qs before 6.10.3, as used in Express before 4.17.3 and other products, allows attackers to cause a Node process hang for an Express application because an __ proto__ key can be used. In many typical Express use cases, an unauthenticated remote attacker can place the attack payload in the query string of the URL that is used to visit the application, such as a[proto]=b&a[proto]&a[length]=100000000. The fix was backported to qs 6.9.7, 6.8.3, 6.7.3, 6.6.1, 6.5.3, 6.4.1, 6.3.3, and 6.2.4 (and therefore Express 4.17.3, which has "deps: qs@6.9.7" in its release description, is not vulnerable).

Found in base branch: main

Vulnerability Details

In versions "<=8.5.1" of "jsonwebtoken" library, lack of algorithm definition in the "jwt.verify()" function can lead to signature validation bypass due to defaulting to the "none" algorithm for signature verification. Users are affected if you do not specify algorithms in the "jwt.verify()" function. This issue has been fixed, please update to version 9.0.0 which removes the default support for the none algorithm in the "jwt.verify()" method. There will be no impact, if you update to version 9.0.0 and you don’t need to allow for the "none" algorithm. If you need 'none' algorithm, you have to explicitly specify that in "jwt.verify()" options.

Found in base branch: main

Vulnerability Details

Versions "<=8.5.1" of "jsonwebtoken" library could be misconfigured so that legacy, insecure key types are used for signature verification. For example, DSA keys could be used with the RS256 algorithm. You are affected if you are using an algorithm and a key type other than a combination listed in the GitHub Security Advisory as unaffected. This issue has been fixed, please update to version 9.0.0. This version validates for asymmetric key type and algorithm combinations. Please refer to the above mentioned algorithm / key type combinations for the valid secure configuration. After updating to version 9.0.0, if you still intend to continue with signing or verifying tokens using invalid key type/algorithm value combinations, you’ll need to set the "allowInvalidAsymmetricKeyTypes" option to "true" in the "sign()" and/or "verify()" functions.

Vulnerability Details

jsonwebtoken is an implementation of JSON Web Tokens. Versions "<= 8.5.1" of "jsonwebtoken" library can be misconfigured so that passing a poorly implemented key retrieval function referring to the "secretOrPublicKey" argument from the readme link will result in incorrect verification of tokens. There is a possibility of using a different algorithm and key combination in verification, other than the one that was used to sign the tokens. Specifically, tokens signed with an asymmetric public key could be verified with a symmetric HS256 algorithm. This can lead to successful validation of forged tokens. If your application is supporting usage of both symmetric key and asymmetric key in jwt.verify() implementation with the same key retrieval function. This issue has been patched, please update to version 9.0.0.
