automated layout creates too sparse graphs

The "apply layout to current graph" leads to diagrams which are too sparse. See the attached screenshots, first is the initial layout, the second an almost-final result of the automated layout -- it extends way beyond the canvas, as can be seen from the minimap (which itself does not fit into its view...).
