How do I remove the linux kernel downloaded (during first run of container system start) from kata-containers?

Hello! I tried apple/container and mostly it's good except it hangs totally and becomes unusable. So for now I'll be switching to something like lima. I'll definitely come back once the issue is resolved though.
But for now I want to uninstall container and remove any leftovers as well.
I can't just run uninstall-container.sh because I installed it via brew.
I restarted the system which stopped most of the processes related to container except containermanagerd and ContainerMetaDataExtractor. How do I stop them without breaking anything?
Also I deleted com.apple.container from Application Support and uninstalled container by brew uninstall container.
Now I want to remove any leftovers that are there.

Hi @theAnuragMishra! I don't think containermanagerd or ContainerMetaDataExtractor are services from container. Any services created by container should have the prefix com.apple.container.

I'm not super familiar with how homebrew does the uninstall for container. But you can try to verify uninstallation by checking your homebrew installation directory like /opt/homebrew/Cellar/ for container. You can also verify that there is nothing in /usr/libexec/container-plugins (see here).

Otherwise, since you already removed the Application Support data, I think that's it. Sorry again for the frustration that #946 has caused you. We're still working on debugging the issue further.

@katiewasnothere these process to be precise are com.apple.containermanagerd and com.apple.ContainerMigrationService. Are these not related to apple/container?
Something else i wanted to confirm, where does container install the linux kernel when doing container system start for the first time (the prompt saying something like "you don't have a linux kernel installed. install the recommended from kata-containers"). I just want to clean this up because possibly this could be the bugged thing causing #946 .

Also, you don't need to be sorry at all. The work you and team is doing is great and I'm very excited for the future of apple/container.

Yes, com.apple.containermanagerd and com.apple.ContainerMigrationService are not related to this project.

The default kernel is installed in the app root (code here if you're curious). The app root by default is ~/Library/Application Support/com.apple.container (see code here).

I actually went through the code but that only confused me because the tar downloaded was something like 277 megabytes while ~/Library/Application Support/com.apple.container/kernels was just 14 megabytes.

To get the kernel, we have to download the entire Kata release kata-static-3.17.0-arm64.tar.xz. Then we extract the kernel file from that release and install it in the app root. Lastly we delete the kata release we downloaded. So the 277 mb you're seeing being downloaded is likely the full release.
