macOS Support

It would be nice to have macOS builds.

I guess it's possible, we just need somebody to deal with it right?

Anyway, this issue acts as a reminder or shout out for a brave developer that would like to try it 😄

Yes, it should be possible. The app is already fully cross platform, and no code changes should be required. I am guessing that the main hurdle is getting libadw to run, but I have no Mac to try.

Hi!

I took some time to work with AIs (2 weeks) and get a working Rayforge build for macOS, it's not being easy but not it not only opens but I'm able to load a svg and work with it:

I didn't try to burn it on a machine as I have no a GLBR available (just a Ruida controller one), so the only issue I easily identify is that there is no 3D preview of my work:

I'm keep you updated with my progresses but, as said, it's mainly AI work, I'm the guide and prompter, I don't know if it is adding junk or unnecessary code... but ATM this is better than nothing 😉

If you want me to try something to test it let me know.

Wow, that is cool! MacOS support was requested by many! How is this built? Can this be done in a Github pipeline?

I found out the hard way that AIs are really bad at writing shaders and 3D code in general, they get too confused with coordinate systems. But Amazing that GL runs already.

Another possible source of this not rendering could be the textures produced by the pipeline. For debugging, I recommend switching the "show travel paths" toggle on, then you can see of vertices (not textures) are drawn at least.

I'm working locally with a macOS environment, I'm trying to follow your scheme with Linux and Windows... I guess it will be able to do it in a GitHub pipeline but it's soon to "port" it there.

Now I get the 3D view, but looks like it's mirrored:

I was also missing SVGcairo, now I get a preview but not an all SVG files, there is something wrong with some, I'm still trying to get the bug as I think it is related with the canvas because if I load a svg file with the regular A4 template it loads but doesn't preview correctly while if I shrink the canvas to the shape bounding box it works perfectly...

Another issue I'm facing is that when I have a document with more than 1 shape, only 1 is traced, I need to go into the step layer settings and force "rescan content"

So I'm still playing around... by the way, I'm on v0.24, I don't know if I really need to update to newer versions to get any important fix...

Before Christmas holidays I played with CI but I couldn't make it to compile my macOS branch, my knowledge about the subject is low so even with AI help I wasn't successful...

Then Christmas holidays arrived and had no spare time for almost anything but real life...

I've seen your new versions and I would like to resume my work, at least update it to the actual version, compile it locally and test if everything works as expected.

Then I'll try again the CI thing, I don't know if you could help in this part...

I'm not (yet) part of the RayForge developer group, but I do have experience packaging Python Applications for MacOS. If you don't have time to work on it, is it alright if I take over?

When you said that you couldn't get it to compile, what are you referring to by "it"? A dependency? Or the actual app via PyInstaller?

Oh! I didn't checked who was writing... sorry about it.

Rayforge compiles fine in my computer, I was trying to setup GitHub Actions (CI) so that it gets automated and no dependent of my computer dependencies and configuration...

I did it with IA, I'm not an experienced programmer so it would be nice that someone with experience on that side could review the IA generated code.

Let me work on updating the code to last main version and I let you know.
