Applying ANY mod causes major frame rate drops

tl;dr So much as applying a movment speed tweak (ive tested all kinds of mods) causes major frame rate dips and the gpu usage spikes crazy high. going from 200+ to 60-40.

Im on arch. Nvidia 3070 550.76 | KDE Plasma 6.0.4 | 6.8.7-2-cachyos-echo | proton variants dont help

I'm having the same issue. I have not installed any texture mods or anything of the sort that would normally cause this. I have gone from 180 FPS down to 35-63 and had to change from maximum to the lowest settings, and even then I still have a large variance in frame rates.

I am using Manjaro with a GTX 1080Ti, a Ryzen 5 5600g overclocked to 4.65 GHz, and Nvidia driver version 550.67 on Xfce running proton GE 9-4. If there are any other system details that would help please let me know.

Hi, sorry for not answering. I no longer have a powerful enough laptop to test this with, however, I have discussed it with other members of the community and it seems to be a general issue with NVIDIA GPUs.

A possible fix mention is to try using Proton 7 instead of the latest (Proton 9), as it seems new versions of proton with NVIDIA drivers limit the game to 1GB of VRAM when using mods.

To test this, right click DOOM Eternal in your Steam Library, go into Compatibility, check the "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool", and from the dropdown select Proton 7. It should look like this:

fyi now the game simply refuses to boot if even installing the mod managers stuff into the game

It doesn't matter what mods I use. I even tried not using any mods. Just letting the game install all of its tools running the injector with nothing in it that alone caused it to be unable to boot

Do you know how to run the mod injector from the terminal so we can do some troubleshooting steps?

actually it refuses to run if built from aur from anywhere but the terminal. i think the game just refuses to boot sometimes anyway, requiring a restart for no understandable reason
