Slow constraints generation/memory issue

The compiler hangs (in emit-r1cs mode) and eventually crashes the terminal when there are a large number of constraints (over 10k ish? on my machine). This is presumably due to a memory problem, since a file can be divided into chunks and compile fine, but will not compile all together.

I have attached a test file- its a butchered version of the simplex algorithm we are working on, without any fixed-point, gadgets, etc. It compiles fine when it's "chunked up" (The easiest way to see this is by commenting out different function calls in the simplex_prover() method near the bottom.) simplex_prover.c.txt

I have been using this command to run:

Yeah, the compiler's resource usage (compute, memory) is pretty abysmal.

I have one high-level idea about how to improve this (use hash-consing to represent SMT terms: I have some progress towards this on a branch, but am not done), and I suspect that there are a lot of lower-level changes that would help too. I don't know that much about writing resource-efficient Haskell, alas...

That's probably a good idea if you're on a tight time frame.

I'd like to take a look at the benchmark that you provide, @jkwoods. It would be useful to profile it and see where we run into problems. Could you let me know which repo/branch you're using to compile it?

I was compiling the above example on our fork, on the master branch. I just tried it on the your main repo (master branch), and it threw a compilation error (due to small Term.hs change). I modified my example; this version no longer throws a compilation error, but it still hangs/throws memory issue. (So you can run this one on your repo to see the problem.)

We figured out that the issue is array assignment- with a static index (i.e. array[1] = something) it takes a few minutes but compiles fine. With a variable index (i.e. array[v] = something, where v goes through a few complicated transformations) it hangs.

I think we minimized the offending code. Here's two curious examples that produce permutations of arrays with very different runtimes in the compiler.

This one is fast and uses about 3GB of RAM.
