HeartBeat is a WordPress API that is shipped with WordPress and (only recently cleared as stable... go figure) that enables server-to-client-like communication by using frequent automatic AJAX requests. It isn't instantaneous like a chat window but it is darn-good enough for what DDS will ever need and it is supported by WordPress... and there are a ton of reasons why this is the solution we should use for Server-To-Client but I'm not going to explain here, ask me in person. For more info on the Heartbeat API see Mike Schroder's WordCamp Talk (I attended an updated version of his talk at WCNYC this summer but it's not on wordpress.tv) and the Developer Docs Which could really be improved on
