diff-hl-dired-mode doesn't check subdirectories

I'm using dirvish's dirvish-side and when I open a project that contains more than one .gitignore nested it only show's the root one.

Here's my emacs folder under my dotfiles:

Hi! I think you mean to say that on the second screenshot there are no status indicators on the left - and that might correlate to the existence of the nested .gitignore. I'm not sure how that would work, but maybe. The thing to understand, however, is that we ask Git to list files (registered, changed, etc), we don't traverse the directory tree looking for files.

AFAICS the top level project is a Git repo all right. Does it include the emacs subdirectory as registered? git ls-files output in the top dir should include the /emacs/* files in its output.

Sometimes the config approach in such cases is to have subdirectories like emacs gitignore-d and register them as separate repositories, but I don't see a nested .git anywhere there, which would seem necessary for this to work.

yes, "dotfiles" is the repo that contains .config/emacs inside, it's not another git. You can take a look if you want https://github.com/chrisemke/dotfiles

so emacs doesn't have it's own .git, only it's own .gitignore because I like to have this settings by folder in this case
