Yeah, the flatpak release got too little attention, thanks for bringing this up.
I finally released 0.5.9 right now, it should become available in flathub, soon.

What's more important: I've now automated a good portion of the flatpak release process. Subsequent releases (e.g. the upcoming NormCap v0.6.0) should be easier/quicker.

I'm using the Flapak version on arch btw. Since I upgraded to 5.9 just now, I get the "Error code 1 received from xdg-portal!" error again which was already mentioned in a bug report by some nixos-user and me. Do you know the reason why? Is this a bug with xdg-desktop-portal?

@IPnator, yeah, I think the flatpak screenshot permissions are not preserved correctly between updates.

You can show the permission by running:

flatpak permission-show com.github.dynobo.normcap

In the output should be a line at the bottom showing:

[...]
screenshot screenshot com.github.dynobo.normcap yes                           0x00

If this is not the case, try granting the permissions by running:

flatpak permission-set screenshot screenshot com.github.dynobo.normcap yes

The output of flatpak permission-show was empty, so I ran the command to enact the permission for screenshots. The permission-show command now says that normcap has permission for screenshots, but when I start normcap as flatpak it crashes again, again with the same error. If I start it directly from the source code it works.

I also tried it in an x11 session and it worked (of course). Besides KDE Plasma I also tried hyprland where it said to install grim. That seemed a bit strange to me, because with flatpak all dependencies should actually be in the flatpak. Nevertheless, I did it once, and it also crashed under hyperland with the xdg error. The message grim should be installed remained.

I find this a bit strange, because on other distros (with older packages?) like Fedora or Debian it works.

The underlying reason for this error is the org.freedesktop.portal.Screenshot protocol. This is the standard for doing screenshots on Wayland, but
a) it's quite limited in functionality (especially regarding querying and requesting permission)
b) the implementation changed from protocol version to version
c) different desktop environment behave slightly different

All of this unfortunately makes it hard to deliver a good consistent user experience across the systems. Most 3rd party screenshot tools I know are suffering from this inconsistencies. TBH, it's quite frustrating.

In the current NormCap v0.6.0-beta1 I tried to make the experience more robust. I'll try to create a flatpak version of the beta in a testing branch, so people can test it. Stay tuned.

That's clearly a bug. In flatpak, it shouldn't try to call other screenshot-tools. I'm gonna fix that. (Calling those from AppImage and Python package are a good workaround for some permission problems, but the security model of flatpak requires going through the dbus portal)
