Improve unit tests

The current unit tests that reside in the `tests/` directory are _very_ minimal and need to be expanded on.

Additionally, the code in `main.py` should be broken out as much as possible into individual methods so that additional unit tests can be written for the code that is currently all in a large `main()` method.
