Querying /api/usage results in a timeout

To reproduce the error:

* start the services locally
* go to `localhost:80/api`
* click on the `usage` endpoint
* after a while the server timeout page appears

The other queries seem okay but the sheer amount of data from the *usage* query causes django to attempt a lot of processing and the server times out waiting for the response.
