Search api is not returning results

Hi there-

I am new to API and wanted to try to use the yelp.Api for a class I am taking. However, the search_results example you provided in your readme file does not appear to be working:

search_results = yelp_api.Search(term="my search term")
for business in search_results.businesses:
print business.name

do you have any ideas? Thanks!

Hey @rickjunli,

It looks like the problem is that the location field is required and wasn't not provided. I'm not sure if this was a change on Yelp's part or we just missed it in the documentation, but I've updated the README to reflect that.

I've also updated the library to have more informative error messages here.

search_results = yelp_api.Search(term="my search term", location="my location") # location and search term are required
for business in search_results.businesses:
    print business.name

if you want to update to the new version with more error handling, i've published to pypi. just run

pip install python-yelp-v2 --upgrade

Thank you so much for the quick response. Yup it's working now after I added the location as part of the parameters.

Would you mind helping me out with one more question? The API is only returning 20 results as far as I can tell. Is this because of Yelp API's restrictions or is that the default result parameter I could change somewhere?

I think the limit maximum is 20 results on Yelp's side, but you can pass in a limit and offset parameter to page through the results.

e.g.

page = 0
page_size = 20
search_results = yelp_api.Search(term="my search term", location="my location", limit=page_size, offset=page * page_size)
while search_results:
    page += 1
    search_results = yelp_api.Search(term="my search term", location="my location", limit=page_size, offset=page * page_size)

(haven't tested that code)

Is it possible for me to get neighborhoods data? I tried business.neighborhood and got an error message saying ''Business' object has no attribute 'neighborhoods'. The same thing if I try location.neighborhoods. I see that the "neighborhoods" field belongs to the location object in your code but I am not sure how to reference it. Do you mind helping me understand? Thanks!

No problem.

Each business has a location property (you can see this in the code here), and the location will have information, including an array of neighborhoods (see this in the the code here)

So you should be able to do something like

print business.location.neighborhoods

I know the documentation for this project is a little light. hope this helps!
