Feature Req : Fabric version

Hello,

Just wanted to drop by to say that this mod is a godsend, the idea is so simple yet the execution was done flawlessly.

I just have one grief which is that I run most of my servers on Fabric to try and remain as vanilla as possible in terms of the actual game mechanics but I don't mine a few QOL mods here and there such as yours.

So I was wondering if maybe you had any prior experience knowledge of the Fabric API and would be willing to make a Fabric compatible version of this by any chance.

If not I might honestly just fork and port it over if thats ok with you because I think its really a must have to be honest.

I'd love to see a Fabric version, however I have never used its API. Maybe you have an example for the "basic structure" of a Fabric plugin, including the maven configuration? If so, I could probably get it done^^

Also if you wanna fork it yourself, please give me a link to the project so I can see it too :)

If you want a good idea of what an "ideal" Fabric project would look like I would go for any of jellysquid3 he pretty much represents 90% of what people currently use Fabric for (probably true in terms of monthly downloads). I do very little Java but was able to make a few basic mods in mere minutes with their dev setup so I guess its quite friendly to newcomers, and I'm the biggest one when it comes to Java stuff.

Also as a temporary workaround I am using https://github.com/CardboardPowered/cardboard which does seems to have implemented enough of the API to be able to do an unload (albeit quite slowly I feel, compared to spigot at least) and doesn't have the fancy schmancy particles but it's quite usable in its current state so there's always that I guess :)

edit: Coardboard does break the "SimpleAuth" plugin I use though so I might still have to patch one or the other myself but still pretty good i guess

@mfnalex Hi there, I have been looking basically everywhere for a 'sort to chest' mod for 1.18.2 Fabric (using All of Fabric 5) and your mod seems to be entirely perfect for it. I noticed this request for a Fabric version and I didn't want to spam your github with additional requests.

Are you still considering making a Fabric port or is that not currently in the cards? Thanks for giving this a read.

Maybe some day. I really dislike how everything in fabric seems to be working by hacking into existing files, requiring changes on every new MC version, etc. To me it looks like Fabric is nothing but a really large pile of dirty patches, that require adjustments for every new version. Basically the opposite of what a plugin API should provide.

Maybe I am wrong on that, I don't know enough about Fabric. This is just my first impression. Maybe I'll some day have time to port ChestSort to Fabric, I don't know this yet.

I have also checked out the repositories of jellysquid3, as @jukefr has linked, but couldn't find a single fabric mod on their github?

@mfnalex Hm, I see, thank you for commenting so quickly. I am pretty much a novice with Minecraft modding, the extent of my knowledge is running a modded server for friends and manually adding mods to the modpack haha.

If you ever get around it, that would be great, but understandable if that won't happen with this context in mind.

I was under the impression that Fabric was a pretty light framework easier for development, but maybe I misunderstood while reading up on it all. Do you believe Forge is better in that regard?

I neither know anything about forge, nor about fabric. I have always only used Bukkit/Spigot, which work fundamentally different than Forge/Fabric :/

But yeah, I have not forgotten about the fabric requests, but it'd require me to learn how fabric works in general and that's not something I could do in a few days, I guess :D I know someone who's quite confident in fabric, so I'll just ask them sometime to show me the basics

No pressure at all. I appreciate you reacting to a thread that's over a year old to get me some answers. If it ends up happening, I'd be ecstatic and if not... as said, totally understandable. It's always a miserable practice to try and learn something that is so divorced from a methodology you are used to. Especially if it's not a clean framework and instead a hatchet job.
