Mac alt/option key will not activate menus

On windows I can use the alt or meta keys to open a menu via the keyboard.
On mac - this appears to not be there at all - as the menu names dont have underlines for their hotkeys.

I did verify that my alt key was registering properly - because Alt-Z to toggle word wrap does work as expected.

Option more works like AltGr, there's simply no "Alt" key.
At least F10 works, see my #727.
