@isidorn the model returned a finish reason of UNEXPECTED_TOOL_CALL. Typically we've seen this happen in one of two cases. Either the system prompt references a tool which is not actually defined in the tool definitions, and then the model tries to call it and finds that it doesn't exist. Or we've also seen issues caused by removing tools partway through the conversation.

It seems to happen more when it is observing a large amount of code.

Incidentally I updated my VSCode doing a restart and there are several changes to the way the agent screen works and I am no longer having to 'Try again' repeatedly. If you're having issues with Gemini 3 try updating. I believe it is taking advantage of new features that will crash the older versions of VSCode.

I've updated to the latest (oddly had to do that twice). Still getting the error. Gemini 3 is effectively dead and can't be used. Every time I use it I get a failure :(

Models should be able to handle tool calls that are removed during the conversation. History can always potentially have tool calls for tools from one model that are not applicable to another model.
