Any way to edit sounds?

Don't worry about sound convertion. I'm interested about if is possible to modify any sound and then rebuilding the game rom, because i'm trying to follow readme steps and sounds aren't being replaced, still hearing the default sounds instead of modified or muted sounds as a signal of change....if im explaining...
