[dwgsim_core] failed to generate a read after 10001 trials

I'm struggling to understand the error messaging from dwgsim. I'm trying to generate reads of ~4X coverage from a bird genome and have gotten this error message: [dwgsim_core] failed to generate a read after 10001 trials multiple times. I initially got this error when trying to generate reads for the entire genome (see error message attached).

I thought that this might be related to memory, so splitting up the genome and simulating reads on each chunk would resolve the error, but it didn't (see example error message for one chunk). In the latter case, there are some warnings about short sequences e.g. [dwgsim_core] #3 skip sequence 'SWJQ01027679.1:0-431' as it is shorter than 650.000000! but nevertheless the error is the same.

I'm a little lost as to what is actually causing the error and how to resolve it.
