Further investigation revealed that "pub/sub" functionality is not required.

Our old logging / perm banning system, Trello, required this since the server held the Trello data in memory. So every time Trello updated with a new ban, it also updated the data in RAM. This method isn't necessarily bad, but there are other methods of using Trello.

Now, instead of updating our RAM data, we can instead just check the username against the database to see if that user is banned when the user joins the server. This will require updating of the webserver. The only concern with checking against the database every time a user joins would be potential server overload when many users join at once. A potential solution to this would be simply adding small delays, even if it may take a few seconds to kick a banned user off the server.

The solution to server overload also brings up the idea of botting. A group of users joining the server at mass, usually 5 or more at once. An "anti-bot" script would be simple, if 3 - 5 users join the server in the same 2 or so second period, they will be kicked off to prevent "bots." The kick message would emphasize if the user was mistakenly kicked, they may rejoin without any changes.
