Is it possible to add "smart-text" in Overtype? (edit: "autocompletion" is a better term)

I'm aware that the term "smart-text" is pretty vague. I mean things like what happens on Github when you type a #; a little popup appears with various issues and pull requests, and as you type numbers it refines what is shown, and you can click one of the issues or pull requests to insert that issue number.

(If you know a better term for this feature, please let me know.)

I see the specific "#<issue number> as link" markdown extension has been done in diffplug@f5149dc, but my question is really about the UX of the popup.

Perhaps this could be called “autocompletion”, if I'm not mistaken?

For example, we could provide per editor instance:

• a regular expression to detect multiple patterns at the input cursor position
• a callback function (with the pattern found as a parameter, and which returns the list of suggestions and the text to complete the pattern for each suggestion if selected by the user)

I am also interested in this feature.
