MKV is the only supported output container. DirectStream is (should be) container agnostic, Plex reads the streams inside the container and sends them to the client for rendering, so MKV or MP4 will not (should not) make a difference. |

I have hard time figuring out how to debug this. I have an MKV movie file optimized by PlexCleaner. The movie stutters and artifacts appear every 5-10 seconds when played on the TV (obviously the same file when opened through VLC Player directly on a PC has no issues). I confirmed in the Plex Dashboard that no transcoding happens so the TV and Plex "attempt" to direct play it without transcoding which leads to these issues. If I force disable Direct Play and Direct Stream, stuttering ends, because transcoding happens, but obviously live transcoding is not efficient all the time. I tried running the movie through a simple "container change from MKV to MP4" using e.g. That's why I reached the conclusion that it's not a CODEC issue but a CONTAINER issue (have to use MP4 rather than MKV). @ptr727 Do you have any tips how can I efficiently solve this problem, with the help of PlexCleaner. I even considered running a batch container change from MKV to MP4 of all the library at some point, but I see that PlexCleaner heavily advertises that the library is much better represented/repackaged as MKV containers rather than MP4 container files. Why? Is this a personal preference? |

What's funny is that another MKV container file with higher bitrate and higher resolution than the one that's stuttering - plays just fine. It also has embedded subtitles, so I don't think it's the subtitles that's causing the issue. I'll try stripping them and retrying. But in the meantime, here's the ffprobe output of the MKV that plays just fine. I haven't been able to isolate what makes this MKV work fine, but the other one in the previous comment - stutter. {

Hey @ptr727 and @Dzhuneyt I just read your post and think this might help. First of all it is good to be fully aware that PlexCleaner uses handbrake to do allot of its magic handbrake does on the secret change subtitles codecs to be SSA/ASS Alpha Substation. I will link you to some sources to reflect this.
Now my solution to thus problem. https://github.com/C0nw0nk/DisableForcedSubtitles I just remove the forced subtitles flags that way all media in the library will not try to play with subtitles unless the user chooses too. Inside your containers you do get some extra magic for example tags and xml content that could tell you what actors are in the scene and chapter markers I remove these it could be good to play around and remove those too. I am well aware of Handbrake's poor subtitle logic, Handbrake is typically only used for de-interlacing, and if media has subtitles, then PC will remux the original subtitles back and ignore the subtitles created by HB. There is no support for subtitle conversion as converting from raster to text is non-deterministic. |

I have on occasion considered adding functionality to remove types of subtitles, specifically raster types as they are more troublesome, maybe a type of config that specifies types of subtitle tracks to remove, e.g. ass? For forced subtitles, the idea is that it tells the player that even if the track language matches the user language to still play subtitles, as the language at that time is non-native, e.g. aliens speaking. So not sure removing forced flags are useful? |

@ptr727 It is a feature request to be fair to handbrake that at some point is likely they will have it implemented so it does not change the codec of the subtitle to ASS but will instead preferably PASS THROUGH the codec leaving it unchanged from the original media. But thats a handbrake issue for them to resolve at some point. My view is disable the forced / default subtitle flag or remove the subtitles or convert the subtitle back to SRT or its original format will be @Dzhuneyt best solution to his playback dilemma since i am sure buying a new TV is a pretty expensive solution. |

To be clear, PC already ignores the HB subtitles, and restores the original subtitles, so HB and subtitles is an annoyance not an issue, i.e. if the original was SRT then even after HB it will still be SRT. The flags are not altered. |

It seems like my 2017 Samsung TV has trouble playing MKV files, regardless of their bitrate. Using DirectPlay and streaming from a relatively powerful Plex server. I checked the server Dashboard, and no transcoding happens.
The playback on the TV starts to stutter every 5-10 seconds and some artefacts appear on screen. Occasionally, the video will even get out of sync from the audio.
I did many many experiments with various files and various bitrates, as well as codecs. After I found PlexCleaner, I thought all my problems will be gone because it will "normalize" all these files for playback on a standard Samsung smart TV.
No luck, even after transcoding the entire library with PlexCleaner.
The only things that solve the issue are:
Long story short, I'd like to keep using PlexCleaner for all of its benefits, but preferably, I'd like ti ask PlexCleaner to change the container of all files from MKV to MP4.
Is there a way to achieve this without too much hacky workarounds?
(I tried changing the container of a few files from MKV to MP4 using ffmpeg but it seems the next time I run PlexCleaner it converts them back to MKV)
