Editing news.md

I am trying to edit the news.md page.  What tags work?  I have tried MD, html and ascii tags with no luck.

What tag is used for line break?
What tag is used for bold?
What tag is used to change color?

I have done some T&E with little success and have not stumbled onto it yet.
