Some questions about the project

Hi, I'm looking the code and I see that you're using Python 2.7, is there a particular reason for not using Python 3, like dependencies or any kind of issue?

is the app hosted somewhere?

finally, I forked the project and I'd like to use postgresql instead sqlite, is that ok?

I think most of the people in academia are still using python 2. There

are debates over python 3, for example:
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7799524. so I don't intend to jump
directly over to python3 while most are still using python2.

The app is currently not hosted anywhere and only runs locally.

For sqlite, one does not need to set up a database schema, and the code

can directly run locally. Its very easy to switch database schemas.
postgresql is not free, so even if you don't like sqlite, I would prefer
mysql ?

Hi
Postgresql is actually free and I just prefer this db because django mysql backend uses a lib that gave me some problems in the past. But it's ok, I can use sqlite if the project does not need to be hosted yet. In the other hand I have some projects written on python 3, I read that post some months ago and I can say that I have no problems working with Python 3, for experience I can say that the main problems are for people that have huge code bases written on python 2.7. In that case is very very difficult to port it. I even did some research and I found that the scientific python libraries are doing very well with python 3 and personally I consider that I stop having some issues that I had with python 2 and I just don't with python 3. However, if you prefer to use Python 2.7 I'm ok and comfortable with that, and I'm equally happy to contribute to the project. :)

So, I'll suggest this configuration:

• Python 2.7
• Django 1.7
• Sqlite3

In any case, I think that it will be easy to jump to another database and production configurations in the future.

 My institution paid postgresql, so I thought its not free... Thanks

for letting me know.
Your plan for the configuration looks good to me. The next move is to
add (multiple) search functions to the database, for example, by chemical
formula (or elements to include or exclude), by number of atoms (with a min
and max range), etc. Do you feel comfortable working on that ?

sure, I feel good with that.

and, I'm not sure if you paid for postgresql, because we use it in our company (and many others) without any fee, maybe you paid for the support from another company? are you 100% sure that you are using postgresql? it is even Open Source software(http://git.postgresql.org/gitweb/) you can even download it for free here: http://www.postgresql.org/download/
