How to add space between line number and code?

I am using emacs via terminal. The line number and the code are side by side and it makes it harder to read the code.
How can add a space or other separating character between the the line number and the code?

Here is how mine look:

Annoyingly tight. I'd like to have as in the screenshot, a bar that separates linenumbers and the code. How to achieve that?

You can use fringe mode to add some space between numbers and the buffer content.

Seriously now, you can change the format of the line with:

(setq nlinum-format "%d ") ;; here we only add a space after the number

(setq nlinum-format "%4d \u2502 ") ;; here we set the minimum number of characters to display the line number to 4
                                   ;; and we add the symbol |
