Python 3 Support - Bare Minimum

I noticed in the other pull request for Python 3 support there were some reservations on non-essential changes to the code base. In case that was holding up the merge, this pull request attempts to do the bare minimum to be py3 compatible.

I'm currently working on getting all my projects updated to be Python 3 compatible so this will definitely be useful.

However, this project cannot go out until all its dependencies are also Python 3 compatible (e.g. Lowdown). I will have a replacement for Lowdown ready soon which should unblock this.
