The call to type(prop.queryValue()) will throw an exception if no default value was provided for simple "string" properties (since they're None). This tweak lets simples be detected appropriately and fall back to type(prop.queryValue()) otherwise.
Previous fix was for 1.8-series of the python interface. This change will work in the current revision.
