When writing the examples, every time I needed the centroids I needed them as an array of coordinates to feed to some plotting functions. The shapely Point centroids were only used as an intermediate step to get the coordinates.

The build failures are due to a remote dataset used for an example in the docs being down. This will be fixed shortly in another pull request.
