I wasn't sure if this was the right place to suggest this, because it involves some pretty big file changes.
Making a base class for paper input decorator would allow other controls to use the same functionality.
For example, paper dropdown menu can use the same decorator (I've also included a polymer element/demo for that), which would possibly fix googlearchive/paper-dropdown-menu#20
