With this, you fix support for Node.js 18 and possibly earlier versions as well. It would be good to have a GitHub Actions CI in place to make sure nothing breaks between changes.

closes #80 and unblock webpack/webpack-dev-server#5618

We can't push rebases to the fork, so I opened #84 from a branch in this repo with the same changes rebased on master and the updated package-lock for CI.

Yes, you can do it with the GitHub cli
