"From waste to worth. Wastopia transforms accountability into impact."
Wastopia is a blockchain and IoT-based ecosystem designed to make waste management transparent, reliable, and rewarding. It bridges citizens, municipalities, and recyclers through a hybrid Hyperledger Fabric + Besu framework, ensuring that every waste event is visible, verified, and valued.
Wastopia stands on three key principles:
- Transparency: Immutable waste tracking from collection to recycling.
- Accountability: Verified data with zero manipulation.
- Incentives: Real-world rewards for verified eco-friendly actions.
Built for developing cities and future generations, Wastopia turns waste into opportunity and builds a foundation for a circular economy.
To create a transparent, incentive-driven, and youth-led waste management system that encourages collective responsibility and sustainable growth.
Dhaka produces over 33,000 tonnes of waste each day. Within two decades, that number could reach 140,000 tonnes. Studies show that 98 percent of Dhaka’s children have traces of lead in their blood, largely from electronic waste handled through unsafe, informal recycling.
Traditional systems lack transparency, motivation, and coordination. Wastopia began at UIU CSE Fest 2025 as an idea to merge technology and accountability. It evolved from a university initiative to a nationally recognized project that brings blockchain transparency to waste management.
| Category | Description |
|---|---|
| Blockchain Transparency | Every collection, transaction, and recycling step is recorded immutably. |
| IoT SmartBins | Sensors track fill level, weight, and location in real time. |
| WastoCoin Rewards | Tokenized incentives for verified waste actions. |
| E-Waste Traceability | Tracks electronic waste from disposal to certified destruction. |
| AI-Based Sorting | Identifies and classifies waste using image recognition. |
| DAO Governance | Community-driven policy decisions and fund allocations. |
| Circular Marketplace | A digital hub for trading recyclable materials. |
| Education and Outreach | Sustainability education in schools and universities. |
IoT SmartBins → Edge Validation → Hyperledger Fabric (Private) →
Hyperledger Besu (Public) → IPFS (Storage) → WastoCoin Wallets and DAO Governance
Architecture Layers:
- IoT Layer: Collects data from sensors and verifies authenticity.
- Fabric Layer: Handles verified participants and local permissions.
- Besu Layer: Provides public transparency and manages incentives.
- IPFS Layer: Stores documents, photos, and proofs securely.
- Application Layer: Interfaces for citizens, recyclers, and administrators.
| Layer | Technologies |
|---|---|
| Blockchain | Hyperledger Fabric, Hyperledger Besu |
| Smart Contracts | Solidity, Go Chaincode |
| IoT Layer | ESP32, RFID, Edge Gateways |
| Storage | IPFS, MongoDB, CouchDB |
| Frontend | React.js, Next.js, TailwindCSS |
| Backend | Node.js, Express.js, Web3.js |
| Infrastructure | Docker, Kubernetes |
| Analytics | Grafana, Apache Superset |
WastoCoin powers the incentive system across the Wastopia network.
| Action | Reward |
|---|---|
| Verified waste deposit | Instant WastoCoin credit |
| Certified e-waste recycling | Bonus rewards |
| DAO participation | Governance tokens |
| Community initiatives | Sponsored reward campaigns |
Tokens can be redeemed for mobile top-ups, utility discounts, vouchers, or used to support environmental programs.
- Waste is deposited in IoT-enabled bins.
- Smart sensors verify data and send it to the blockchain.
- Hyperledger Fabric confirms the record; Hyperledger Besu issues rewards.
- Recyclers process verified waste and log updates.
- Dashboards display real-time transparency for all users.
Wastopia supports the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:
- Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6)
- Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8)
- Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11)
- Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12)
- Climate Action (SDG 13)
- Life on Land (SDG 15)
It also embodies Dr. Muhammad Yunus’s Three Zero Principles: Zero Poverty, Zero Unemployment, and Zero Net Carbon Emissions.
