When I ran pre-commit there were a lot of formatting changes it made, including a lot of trailing whitespace which I've committed here.
It may be worth setting up pre-commit.ci to run pre-commit on pull requests if the contributor didn't do it.
There were also a lot of other changes but I have left them out as they may be contentious.
