Status Updates
(For Eric's group.)
This page describes the current form and content of our weekly status updates. Status updates should be sent by email by the morning of our weekly one-on-one meeting.
The status updates serve two main roles:
-
To encourage and practice goal setting. Research shows that setting specific goals and consciously reflecting on how to achieve them makes you more successful, motivated, productive, and confident.
-
To ensure that we maximize our limited one-on-one time together. The status updates help me to keep track of exactly where you are in your projects, what you're working toward, and how I can help you continue to make progress.
Please make the subject of your status emails [StatusUpdate] followed by the date
in YYYY-MM-DD format. I know this sounds pedantic, but my email filters will be
grateful.
Example subject line: [StatusUpdate] 2016-10-05
Please include the following sections in your status email.
Next milestone(s): Your medium-term research goal(s). Typically the next paper deadline you're targeting (include the date). If you have multiple projects, you might have multiple milestones you're working toward.
Last week's goals: The research goals you set for the previous week. This can be copied and pasted from your previous status report.
Progress: A brief description of the progress you made this week.
Challenges: A brief description of any questions you have or challenges you've encountered. These will typically be the main focus of our meeting. Please emphasize if there is an issue that is blocking you from making progress.
Needs: Any action you currently need from me to continue making progress, such as feedback on a piece of writing. It is OK if this is blank. :-)
Next week's goals: Your plans and goals for the next week. We may revise these during our meeting.
