Links and Referencing

  • All links use https:// protocol
  • Links are descriptive (avoid "click here" links)
  • For pages with a DOI, link through the DOI (e.g., https://doi.org/10.4444/xxxx)

Images

  • All images have descriptive alt text

Tone and Style

  • Avoid writing in the name of the handbook (no "we recommend")

Topic-Specific Standards

  • Topics are nouns or noun phrases
  • Topics are self-contained and concise
  • Topics are title capitalized
  • No include statements in topics
  • Only use regular markdown (no special Quarto code)

Guide-Specific Standards

  • Guides are phrased as questions the reader will find answers to
  • Where relevant, guides are assigned a suitable category

Checklist Usage

  • Fill out this checklist when submitting a pull request
  • Automated checks will verify some of these standards, but manual review is still crucial

At least the following things need to be added or adjusted. Please use the VU page RDM tools as a reference.

  • Include this video
  • Tool selection guide: For data storage, refer to the Data Storage Finder instead of providing considerations here. I'm not sure about the rest of the Tool selection guide. I would like to discuss this with @peer35 and @Elisa-on-GitHub.
  • Change the headings: instead of referring to phases, I would use the categories used on the current RDM tools page. Not all phases in this PR make sense (e.g. 'Storage & Backup Phase') and they are not in line with the terminology in our research life cycle. So let's use 'Data collection tools', 'Data analysis tools' etc.
  • Add GitLab to 'Software & Code Repositories'
  • Add categories 'Research Software' and 'Trainings and Knowledge Items'
  • Add SURFdrive to 'Active Research Storage' and 'Sharing & Collaboration'
  • Add Atlas.ti to 'Data analysis tools'
  • Add SURFfilesender
  • Add an image summarizing all tools NeRDS provides

Update 27-11-2025. I (Elisa) did quite a bit of tinkering with this page. I had a few considerations:

  • I deleted all the selection considerations, because I thought it included some perverse prikkels
  • I changed the headings from research phase to tool application categorisations. I did not follow @Jolien-S 's suggestion above, however, because I'm not entirely sure how e.g. the category 'Trainings and Knowledge Items' translates into a mention on a tools overview.
  • The image summarising the RDM tools at VU exists, but I don't have a current version. I will need to ask someone else if he has it.
