DART Installation Documentation

This documentation serves those who are installing DART at their institutions, and is very much a work in progress.

Installation

This section covers the process of installing DART and its components.

Notes For Installing DART

To find DART installation information see the wiki page for the latest details

  • System requirements are there *For large districts, a change to the PHP config / MySQL config files on the server may be best to optimize large batch exports and document printing - Bolek: can you detail this?

Steps to Install DART

  • Download latest GitHub code
  • Follow installer steps (in process)
  • Manually install following Readme instructions (in process)

To install additional components (is there anything additional?)

Customization

This section covers the process of customizing DART for your institution.

A starter outline of this process:

  1. Create schools
  • Upload 200 X 200 logo (unless changing the Smarty template for header?)
  1. Create Subject Areas
  • Subject ID currently requires two letters...hoping to change that to three
  1. Set up grading systems using the Admin link
  • Multiple grading systems can exist in buildings (standards-based for elementary and traditional A-F for high school, for instance)
  • All scores for tracking student progress for each course are entered by “Toggling” (grading pulldowns by each standard)
  • The overall grade for each course is a straight average of those scores using the grading system in place
  • Some standards “toggles” are actually not calculated into the mix as they are not “grades”, but other information (Quality of Performance or QPI, whether the student is currently eligible for sports, etc...)
  1. Set up GPA calculations

  2. Create Courses (Levels) with standards

  • Standards can be any learning outcome: local, state, national or from an organization for industry certification
  • The “short name” becomes the link in the Tag Cloud for each group or individual identifying key needs
  • Each standard has to have a link to more documentation...a URL that can go to your own web server content, a vendor’s or some other website for resources.
  1. Add kids
  • Add students manually -import is great, but not sure of fields yet) or
  1. Add those kids to levels on their individual screen

  2. Add teachers and administrators (you have to assign them to sites or as districtwide employees

  3. Go to Admin Users and set privileges for the teachers to see their students, but districtwide staff / admins to see all schools

  • There should be a preset that comes close to getting it right at the bottom of that screen
  1. Search for and form groups.
  • Groups are the center of how users interact with the site.
  • The documentation on BSSD's wiki site and the GitHub site has some nice basics on creating groups already posted.
  1. Set up school calendars for each school using the Admin link

Changing Look and Feel / Branding DART for Your Organization

To make further customizations to DART you will need to:

  • Set templates using the Smarty templates for pages
  • Smarty Template Documentation: http://www.smarty.net/documentation
  • Set up terms and variables using the ini file / configuration file

Maintenance
