Paper Writing

MSSL papers will be kept as .TeX documents.

Lyx

  • MSSL writes with TeX, but prefers the document processor LyX, a sort of Word for LaTeX. If you use LyX for editing, you should still save/export as a .tex file to push to the Github repo. Why Lyx?

  • LyX 2.3.0 is out and easy to install on Linux, but doesn't have an official easy-install version for Windows, but you can use the unofficial LyXWinInstaller, which will also update MikTex. This link will download the updater.

  • Additional help can be found at Lyx tips.

  • If the default LyX installers for Windows, use the mirror they link to.

  • Information on updating Lyx on Ubuntu.

Import .tex

To open a .tex file in Lyx, use File -> Import -> Latex(Plain)

Track Changes

To enable track changes in Lyx, use Document -> Change Tracking -> Track Changes

Write pdf

the View button will show you a pdf of your document, but it will not save it. To save a pdf you must go file -> export -> pdf().

If you will be using Lyx alot, you may want to add a button to save the pdf to your toolbar. To do that, you must change the stdtoolbars.inc file as described here. You may have to give yourself file permission first to edit the document. In Ubuntu this can be done from the command line as:

sudo chmod -R o+rw /usr/share/lyx2.3pre/ui/stdtoolbars.inc
